A civil complaint is the beginning of every lawsuit. It states the cause of action, as well as the damages a plaintiff alleges. A civil lawsuit can be brought when the amount in controversy is over $7,500 and therefore over the small claims limit. The complaint must be drafted, served upon the other party and a proof of service must be filed with the court.
